How they can improve employee well-being, performance, and your bottom line
The next time you get a chance, take a glance around your office. Specifically, look at the people working there. Most of these folks are probably very familiar to you. Surely you know a good amount about them and perhaps have even shared an after-work drink or attended one of their backyard barbecues.
But look a little closer. Unless a strange occurrence has taken place, none of your employees are the same size or shape. And – especially between the men and women – there could be vast differences. So, why is everybody using the exact same type of workstation?
This may be a question you’ve never thought about before. In most offices, workers use identical pieces of furniture. But if you want happier and healthier employees, you may want to make an investment in adjustable workstations.
Increased comfort and productivity
One of the biggest benefits of a workstation that can be adjusted is that it can accommodate all sorts of people. Short or tall, big or little, an adjustable workstation will conform to whatever they need, which will allow everyone to be much more comfortable.
In addition, it’s very possible that you’ll see a big boost in productivity. With everything more easily accessible, employees won’t have to strain as much to get to the things they need. These little differences can add up – saving time and allowing them to get more done sooner. Adjustable workstations are also great for offices in which desk sharing is common, or there are no assigned work areas.
Better health and wellness
In addition to having the ability to be modified for different people, adjustable workstations can also improve health. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can be very detrimental, to the extent that some have concluded it’s a “public health risk.” Even someone with excellent posture is putting a lot of strain and pressure on his or her back discs, and the issues don’t stop there.
A study by the American Cancer Society that found that too much sitting is associated with a higher mortality risk. The study looked at 120,000 people with no history of any serious illnesses and discovered that their mortality rates skyrocketed when they worked more than six hours every day seated. Compared to those who sat less than three hours a day, death rates for men rose 18 percent and those for women went up a whopping 37 percent.
The beauty of adjustable workstations is that they allow people to periodically stand while they work. In addition to alleviating pain, this will enable them to burn more calories and stay in better physical shape. Standing desks have also been proven to help productivity as well as engagement.
Your company won’t run without your employees, and if you want them firing on all cylinders, it’s up to you to provide them with the best possible means to do it.
