Find out how offices are evolving

For some people, the concept of modular office materials is synonymous with boring or conservative, or – worse – cheap and temporary. Well, DIRTT is changing that thinking. This is a company that creates customized interiors made with quality materials that offer exceptional performance, adaptability, and visual appeal.

Every year DIRTT holds an event to display its latest products and solutions, and Compass Office Solutions was in Chicago for DIRTT Connext 2016 to see what the future holds for innovative, prefabricated, interior construction solutions and design.

Virtual reality

DIRTT prides itself on being innovative and doing things nobody else does, and the three-day showcase didn’t disappoint. The highlight may have been the unveiling of ICEreality. Always ahead of the game when it comes to tech, DIRTT’s newest tool utilizes virtual reality to plan and design interiors. With ICEreality, a 3D model of the proposed space can be placed into the real environment in which it will inhabit. For interior designers, this is a game-changer.

“You can virtually build or add to what’s already physically around you, and you can do that in a group experience, regardless of location,” said Barrie Loberg, one of the developers behind ICEreality. “This completely changes our ability to share the virtual experience and how we create and design.”

Using ICEreality, decision makers can (literally) walk through a design and make any necessary changes in real time. At the same time, because these alterations are immediately reflected in the engineering plans, it is much easier to keep track of the budget.

Designing for Millennials

Another trend in office design that was evident at DIRTT Connext has to do with Millennials. This demographic is now the biggest living generation in the U.S. Currently, they make up about a third of the workforce, and that will increase to around 50 percent in just a few years. This is why employers have to think about Millennials with their office designs, and one way they can do this is by incorporating residential elements.

Even if a company doesn’t have a work-at-home policy, it can still bring a little bit of the home into the office through the use of comfortable pieces of furniture as well as spaces that may look more like a living or dining room than a traditional place of business. Millennials – as well as older generations – will appreciate the setup.

After attending DIRTT Connext 2016, we think the future of prefabricated interior construction solutions and design looks very bright indeed. With high-quality construction methods and a range of styles, these solutions are an excellent way for offices to create adaptable spaces that offer better functionality as well as beautiful, unique designs.
